Got an old Uniden Stalker radar detector model lrd2300sw, about 10+ years old, has detection for X, K, Ka 'superwide' band, and oncoming Laser. Its so old that its not even listed anymore in Unidens web site, even in the archivesIt still seems to work, in that I hear it going off all the time for what seems like no reason on the X band, which, as I remember was pretty normal. But I'm recently worried because Ive been seeing cops pointing hand held things at drivers and it hasnt gone off. Which makes me wonder if its really working. And I dont want to ask a cop to do a test for me, thanks very much!I'm wondering if there is anything new in technology out there, like new bands that this critter doesn't know about, etc, or is this thing still adequate for whats hiding in the bushes?Or should I just ask Santa for a new one?

What are the potential benefits over what I've got, in the $100 or less price range? At 10 years you're ready for a new one. Laser technology is the killer now. Anyway it's 1am and I'm tired so I'll paste in my standard boiler plate response and hope that you find it helpful. Note those X-band alerts are probably supermarket door openers.boilerplateThere are a handful of varying quality products on the market, but at the high-end are just two major radar detector religions. Escort and Valentine. Both are excellent ‘money is no object’ detectors and both have zealots that would rather fight than switch.

So which is best? Well it depends on what you need. I’ve been using radar detectors for about 25 ticket free years but only about 30% of the credit goes to using good quality detectors. The other 70% comes from using my brain and keeping my eyes open.

Anyway I don’t have up to the minute test results but here is my take based on historical averages.Historically Valentine has usually had the highest sensitivity and as a result produced more false alarms than the Escort. This is the one that you want if you are running in an illegal cross country road race.

Is it worth $500? How much is a speeding ticket and will a ticket or two raise your insurance rates?Escort produces four lines. The portable 8500, 9500, the cordless solo, and a line of built in systems. I’m told that the 8500 will give you Valentine-1 or near Valentine-1 performance levels with far fewer false alarms. A step up is the 9500. Essentially an 8500 with a GPS (not a navigation system) used to record locations that generate false alarms and ignore them in the future.

Are they worth $300-500? Again, how much is a speeding ticket and will a ticket or two raise your insurance rates?Because of power compromises the cordless Solo isn’t quite as sensitive as either.

But it’s what I use and it does the job for me just fine. The also rans Bel and Cobra make inexpensive consumer grade detectors with street prices ranging from $50-150. You pretty much get what you pay for at these price points.

Still their better units are better than nothing (especially in the city) as long as you use your head – AND keep your eyes open.Rocky Mountain This company has a reputation that is beyond horrible. Run away!So will a radar/laser detector save your bacon Maybe.

Uniden Owners Manuals

In general they depend on the laziness of traffic cops. Something that is pretty dependable in a lot of towns not so dependable in others. Lot’s of officers just leave their radar turned on - in which case you should have plenty of warning. But if they are using ‘instant-on’ radar and just lighting up the cars that they think are speeding you could still get nailed. No radar beam - no warning. With luck they will light up somebody well ahead of you and set off your detector.

Hertz uk additional driver fee. With even more luck you won’t be jaded by hundreds of false alarms and will heed the warning.A few smart officers will also hide out next to places known to produce false alarms hoping that detector owners will have learned to ignore alarms from that location. Detectors with a separate tone for each band are a big help here because most false alarms are in the X-Band.Laser is a whole different story. These are aimed and fired at a specific car just like a gun. If it hits your vehicle you’re busted.

Your only hope is that the officer lights up a car not too far ahead of you and that there is enough backscatter (reflections) to set off your alarm before he picks on you. Expect false alarms from infrared automatic door openers.Care and feeding Habitually leaving your detector on the dash of your car while you run into the mall will eventually result in A) the detector being cooked into uselessness by the sun; B) your car being broken into.

Not good!Jammers: Radar jammers are illegal everywhere in the US. The only one that I’m aware of being sold commercially has consistently been identified as a fraud. Laser is another story. I’ve never seen a test on these but if they were legal where I live I would own one.

Unfortunately they aren’t. Traffic lasers are evil beasts! The bottom line is that radar detectors can be a great help in reducing tickets. They are not even close to fool proof. Brains and situational awareness are your first line of defense.

Use your brain and don’t speed in school zones or in known heavily enforced areas. And for god’s sake keep your eyes open! Watch for cops entering the freeway next to you or coming on behind you. Be careful of the officer running next to and slightly ahead of tractor trailers. He’s there just waiting for some idiot to blow by fat, dumb and happily doing 90./boilerplateGood luck!
