If written text-translation has ruled over intercultural communication over the previous centuries, subtitling drives most of the modern contemporary audiovisual productions proliferating in this globalized world, where international dialogue and interlingual communication have become so complex and so vitally important. In this perspective, the technological and artistic innovations advanced in the twentieth century such as the film industry and television broadcasting made imperative the emergence of new forms of translation such as subtitling, dubbing and drama translation. With the expansion of digital technology, the multimodal approach has also been applied to audiovisual translations with a special emphasis on subtitles. This study was designed to investigate the interplay between verbal and multimodal modes, i.e., semiotic, visual, acoustic, and kinetic, and to determine to what extent this interaction affects film subtitles.

It is thus highly significant to assess when it is justifiable for a translator to obviate the original soundtrack in film subtitles when the same message is conveyed with the help of semiotic and multimodal modes other than language. The study also examines the influence of multimodal modes on humor translation and their impact on the humorous effect in a film. To investigate this issue selected scenes of the British sitcom 'Fawlty Towers' will be analyzed with its Polish subtitles. The thesis is a cross-linguistic, multimodal study that can be considered as the next step in the evolution of subtitles and is aimed at all of those who want to delve into the world of audiovisual translation. Films that feature non-standard pronunciation, dialects or other varieties of language, especially when juxtaposed with more standard uses, are said to display linguistic variation. As language use is central to characters' identities and to a film's plot, it is essential to retain the source language (SL) specificity as fully as possible in the target language (TL) subtitles so the target audience can experience the film as authentically as possible.

Given its considerable difficulty, subtitling in this manner is often advised against, avoided or, when attempted, subjected to considerable criticism. This book focuses on a collection of British and French films selected for the range of approaches that they adopt in portraying linguistic variation. Each chapter explores the challenges posed by the subtitling of such linguistic difference in the given films and the corresponding solutions offered by their subtitlers. Drawing on these findings and referring to contemporary thinking in the field of translation studies, this book argues that with insight and skill, linguistic variation can be preserved in film subtitles.

The growing interest in this area is a clear indication that this discipline is going to set the agenda for the theory, research, training and practice of translation in the twenty-first century. Even so, this remains a largely underdeveloped field and much needs to be done to put Screen Translation, Multimedia Translation or the wider implications of Audiovisual Translation on a par with other fields within Translation Studies. In this light, this collection of essays reflects not only the “state of the art” in the research and teaching of Audiovisual Translation, but also the professionals' experiences.
