Bordewijk, Elsevier, Amsterdam, 1978. $121.50.This volume plus volume I (Elsevier, 1973), which treats dielectrics in static fields, constitute an extensive revision and extension of Bottcher’s original book (Elsevier, 1952). The first chapter (Chapter VIII of the combined volumes) defines and interrelates the phenomenological quantities used to describe the time dependent properties of (conducting) linear dielectrics. Chapter IX treats the mathematical properties of some commonly used empirical descriptions of dielectric relaxation. An extensive (and uncritical) survey of experimental results completes the chapter. Chapter X contains a lucid exposition of the Kubo procedure as used in the development leading to a relation between the macroscopic and molecular relaxation behavior.
Several recent references are included supporting the consensus opinion (presented in the text) on the historically controversial problem. Chapter XI treats the molecular theory of the correlation function. The correlation function is used with the results of Chapter X to obtain the complex dielectric permittivity-an experimental observable. Chapter XII deals with infrared and optical frequency polarization. Chapter XIII contains an extensive description of the Kerr effect and related phenomena. High field dielectric phenomena constitute a new major source of dynamical information. Chapter XIV considers the experimental determination of dipole and quadrupole moments.
Chapter XV treats the dielectric properties of molecular solids and liquid crystals. The application of models of the liquid state applied to polar fluids is considered outside the scope of the book. Some computer simulation results are mentioned, however. Detailed analysis of each stage of the mathematical formalism is presented with numerous references to the relevant modern literature. The development is well ordered which makes the text easy to follow despite the encyclopaedic character of the volume.
The authors indicate a selection of topics for a course on dielectric theory. This major work will be of great utility to researchers over the entire spectrum of dielectric phenomena. The inevitable interaction of electricity and magnetism makes portions of the book relevant to magnetic applications. The models of molecular dynamics may be adapted to nuclear magnetic relaxation and some discussion of this topic is presented. Electrically induced NMR line splitting and the anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility fall naturally into the chapter on the Kerr effect. Since dielectric and magnetic properties often provide complementary information on molecular dynamics 30/78/0322-0307$BOOKREVIEWSand structure, this volume will interest readers of the Journal of Magnetic Resonance.
The typography is excellent and the high quality of the book is reflected in its price. There are some changes in organization compared to previous volumes, along with a new editor and several new contributors.
The previous chapter on calculation of hyperfine coupling constants has disappeared because of a decline in the number of papers appearing in this area. “Inorganic radicals” and “organometallic radicals” topics have been combined into a single section. The greatest change is in the chapter on biological systems, which has increased from 40 pages in volume 3 to over 70 pages in volume 4.
The expansion derives in part from the increased activity in this area, ranging from studies of metal sites in enzymes through iron-sulfur proteins, spinlabeled membranes, and free-radical products of irradiation to studies of components of cigarette smoke and aged brandy. It also comes in part because of the thoroughness with which P. Knowles and B. Peake have covered the literature of the field.
The approach in this volume continues as before-brief discussions more informative than a mere cataloging of titles but necessarily less comprehensive than can be included in a critical review focussed on one subject. It is distressing to see the price trend of the Specialist Periodical Reports, a trend which tends to make them library volumes rather than books to be on the desk of every researcher in the field, which is where they should be.
